Amy Thai's marble sculptures from the 'Undercurrent' series (I to III) embody the paradox at the heart of her practice – transforming the permanence of Carrara marble into forms that seem to float. Created during her 2023 Venice residency, the works respond to the city's relationship with water. Thai carves the dense stone into fleeting, organic shapes that appear weightless, as if caught mid-movement. Each sculpture comprises two elements that can move in relation to one another, allowing the work itself to transform. The surfaces contrast between polished smoothness and rough, unworked stone, emphasizing the tension between natural material and artistic intervention. These sculptures capture what the artist calls her 'undercurrent' – hidden forces moving beneath apparent stillness, where solid stone speaks the language of water.
