Amy Thai's
'Undercurrent' series explores contrasting forces – permanence and fluidity,
weight and lightness, strength and fragility. This glass sculpture translates
her marble works (Undercurrent I-III) into transparent crystal. Like its marble
counterparts, the work comprises multiple elements that can rotate in relation
to one another, but where the stone sculptures play with weight made fluid,
this glass piece inverts the dynamic – apparent fragility reveals surprising
strength. The crystal-clear material captures light and shadow differently from
every angle, its transparency allowing the viewer to see through and into the
form simultaneously. The sculpture maintains the organic, flowing quality of
the marble works while demonstrating glass's unique capacity to hold light
within its mass.
