Extending his ‘Tale of the Eleventh Day’ series from painted silk into three-dimensional form, Yang Jiechang has created glass silkworms that embody the same conceptual framework inspired by Boccaccio's ‘Decameron’. The choice of silkworms creates a profound material dialogue: just as silkworms produce the silk upon which Yang paints his meticulous colour works, these glass silkworms represent a metamorphosis of medium – from organic fibre to molten transparency. This transformation mirrors the artist's position as ‘the eleventh fugitive’, constantly moving between traditions, materials and cultural contexts. Working with Murano's master glassmakers, Yang brings his characteristic fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary concerns to Venetian glass tradition. Like the creatures in his painted series that ‘interact, play and mate’ in an imagined world, these glass silkworms exist in a liminal space between nature and artifice, tradition and innovation.
