Kogler’s brain sculptures, his iconic neural
motif, are realized in Murano glass, in different sizes, finishes and colours.
Throughout his practice the brain has served as an image of cognition, memory
and networked information processing, a connection made almost literal by the
fact that in the German of the 1950s, the term for computer was elektronisches
Gehirn (electronic brain). In the digital age the motif points equally to
biological and technological systems of thought. Through traditional glassblowing
techniques that capture the intricate folds and contours of the brain’s
structure, the ancient craft becomes a vehicle for this contemporary
reflection, giving the familiar form a tangible, three-dimensional presence.
